AFCON 2019: Joseph Yobo reveals that Ighalo and Musa should have started against Burundi

Former Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo believes Ahmed Musa and Odion Ighalo should have been included in 11th against Burundi on Saturday.

The introduction of the two players increased the charge of the Super Eagles to ensure a 1-0 victory over Olivier Niyungeko's team.

With the result tied at 0-0, Musa was introduced by captain John Obi Mikel in the 58th minute, while Ighalo replaced Paul Onuachu in the 73rd minute.

Four minutes after its introduction, the Shanghai Shenhua striker broke the draw at Alexandria Stadium after receiving a delicious back-up pass from Ola Aina.

In his reaction to the result, Yobo identified Musa and Ighalo as important players in the Gernot Rohr team, which would give the team a strong start in the first half
.
"The two players who entered [the second half] should have started the game because they have the experience, Ighalo and Musa. Ighalo with his experience in the World Cup and everything, "Yobo told SuperSport.

"These are new players coming in, sometimes they do not have the structure. The structure that is there when you take two of the most important players on the team. Musa is important and Ighalo is the main man who has everything to go around with his qualifying performance.

"Sometimes when you see these uninitiated players, it takes time for the team to get used to a new game pattern and that's what we saw in the first half.

"In the second half, when the changes were made, we improved. This does not mean that those who started the game are not very good either, but sometimes, when entering the Afcon, you are building a new team.

"They have not been with the team for a while, no matter how good they are, it may take some time, so it's safe when their strong players, players who can win their games when they're ready, is always good. to play them. That gives you a better chance.

Nigeria are currently at the top of Group B after racking up three points in their opening match. They will face Guinea in the group's next game on Wednesday at  the Alexandria stadium.
