Barca refuse to pay Matthijs de Ligt €12 million net per year

Barcelona have made it one of their main goals to try to seduce Matthijs from Ligt to the Camp Nou this summer, but in the end they are off the deal.

The Ajax captain is now negotiating with Juventus, also having spoken to Paris Saint-Germain, and reports in Italy suggest that a full agreement was reached between Ajax, Bianconeri and De Ligt. The Blaugrana, meanwhile, made their last move in their attempt to hire him.

Barcelona decided that it was enough when he saw that the total sum to bring De Ligt would exceed 200 million euros. The estimated transfer with Ajax would cost 75 million euros, plus the add-ons, and the defender would sign a five-year contract. Having asked for 12 million euros per year, it would cost the club 120 million euros in that period solely for his salary.

Between the transfer fee and its salaries, the general agreement would cost more than 200 million, and that is to forget one last expense: Mino Raiola's 20%  commission of transfer fee.

Barcelona got up and said no. They were not willing to make that expense for a 19-year-old, and that would have completely unbalanced the salary structure of  the club. In addition, there is another important factor to consider: Barcelona already have four defenders on the team with Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet, Samuel Umtiti and Jean-Clair Todibo.

The Catalans opted not to make one last move and improve their contract offer for De Ligt. Both Juve and PSG are willing to make that payout, but Barcelona is not.

All is not lost to Barcelona, however. Yes, they are losing one of the great prospects of the world in a position that is often difficult to fill, but they still have the 75 million euros they planned to spend on the Dutchman. This money can now go to bring Neymar, Antoine Griezmann or any other player who is on the  Blaugrana wish list.
