Christian Eriksen is being left in limbo because of his desire to leave Tottenham Hotspur while Paul Pogba tries to force Manchester United to leave, with Real Madrid and Juventus interested in both players.
But Real is believed to be reluctant to pay more than £ 70 million for Eriksen if they lose Pogba.
Daniel Levy, the Tottenham president, told interested British rivals that he wants a £ 130 million contract for Eriksen and is believed to be demanding at least 80 million pounds of overseas clubs.
This is more than Real wants to pay for Eriksen with a one-year contract, but the 27-year-old will probably have to wait to find out what happens to Pogba before receiving definitive answers about his own future.
Pogba is the first choice of Real coach Zinedine Zidane but the Spanish club needs to raise money to make new hires after signing with Eden Hazard in a deal of up to 130 million pounds.
Florentino Perez, the president of Real, is an admirer of Eriksen, whom he sees as a cheaper alternative to Pogba, while former Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri, who has taken over Juventus, is a big fan of the midfielder.
Sarri chose Eriksen as his favorite Spurs player while he was in charge at Stamford Bridge and would take the chance of working with him at Juventus if they could not re-hire Pogba.
Asked in November to name his favorite Tottenham player, Sarri said: "Of course Harry Kane is the best English striker at the moment, so a very important player. But if I have to say another name, I like it very much, Eriksen.
"He's a very smart player, a very technical player. He is able to play in the midfield and, at the same time, score eight or nine goals in a season. I think he's a very important player. I really like him, but I do not want to talk about a Tottenham player in terms of the market. I just answered a question.
Eriksen made it clear that he is ready for a new challenge, but he also did not refuse to stay in Tottenham and the club still has not fully resigned himself to losing him.
What happens with Eriksen's future can have a big influence on Tottenham's summer, with the club needing to raise its own funds to sign all top goals from coach Mauricio Pochettino.
Pochettino identified midfielder Tanguy Ndombélé of Lyon, Nicolo Zaniolo of Roma, Donny van de Beek of Ajax and Ryan Sessegnon of Fulham as four of his top priorities.
Nathan Aké of Bourneouth is also a potential target if Toby Alderwiereld leaves the Spurs this summer.
Christian Eriksen revealed: "I feel like I'm at a stage in my career where I'd like to try something new.
"I have the deepest respect for everything that is happening in Tottenham and it would not be a bad thing to stay. But I also said that I would like to try something new.
"I hope something is decided this summer. This is the plan. In soccer, you never know when there might be a decision like that. It can be at any time. The best thing is always that it happens quickly, but in football things take time. "
