Jose Mourinho narrates game where Manchester United couldn't have scored in 900 minutes

Jose Mourinho revealed how he once had Manchester United in a position he would not have scored in 900 minutes during his first term in charge of Chelsea.

United were under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson at the time and Mourinho believes he has found the perfect approach to dealing with the Red Devils.

Having reached English football during the summer of 2004, a challenging opening test was handed over to the new Chelsea boss in his first competitive match.

The Blues beat United 1-0 at Stamford Bridge and broke the title by winning the crown with a 12-point lead over the group they were chasing.

Mourinho believes he put a scoreline in the first game against United, telling the coaches' voice as two old opponents preparing for another opening weekend clash in 2019-20: "It was important to win against a direct rival.

"In the context of 38 matches, you can not lose a lot of points, especially at home, against direct rivals if you want to win the title.

"I thought it was very important because there was a contradiction between our words to the players, our ambitions and then the outcome of the game.

"If you say 'this season is a champion' and then the first game that you lost 3-0 at home to a direct rival, you must step back.

"So it was a step forward, there was a great relationship between that match and what we tried to give the team in the preseason which was mental strength,  being compact, tactical discipline and then being really ambitious in that approach that sometimes I call ' all in 'approach.

"You have to put everything in this game, every minute of the game, every second of the game, everything is inside.

"It's your qualities, your physical power, it's your aggression, it's your emotional control, you have to put everything inside.

"This game was one of those games where we could feel 'all in'.

"It's one of those games where I felt the game is 90 minutes, but it can take 900 minutes and it will not score. We always win the game.

United, now under the guidance of Mourinho's successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is expected to host Chelsea at Old Trafford on 11 August.

As things stand, the Blues have no coach in charge, with Frank Lampard being tightly linked with a return to West London after Maurizio Sarri's departure for  Juventus.
