Crystal Palace is at least £50m ahead of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with Manchester United closing a deal for the right-back.
United hope to seal Wan-Bissaka's contract in the next 48 hours, but a fee is still to be agreed for the 21-year-old.
The deal is expected to reach £60 million and will break the transfer record for a British defender.
Talks between the two clubs over a fee are scheduled to continue and United hopes the deal will pass in the next few days.
Wan-Bissaka is currently in England Under-21 in the European Championship in Italy. England coach Aidy Boothroyd said the FA will help the player and the two clubs if a deal is settled and they need to accommodate a doctor.
But Palace president Steve Parish will refuse to sell Wan-Bissaka until the club's assessment is honored.
